Ambrus boss guide
Ambrus is the first vassal duel most players reach. His route ends in The Gilded Gauntlet at the ruined castle above Maragir.
Prerequisites and timing
- Complete Smoke and Ashes in the prologue.
- Finish enough Ambrus Court Activities for his anger to reach maximum (about three quarters of his activities is normally sufficient).
- Investigate the crucified villager in Maragir, then meet the duel at night. The quest advances two time segments while you ring the bell and summon Ambrus; it has a night requirement but no hard fail timer.
- Optional: complete The Bittersweet Toast and add the Tatzelwurm gland to poison him. Poison damage can carry the duel while you concentrate on defense.
Weaknesses and counters
Ambrus blocks ordinary strings and uses Shadowstep. His reliable opening is a perfect block into perfect riposte; lock on immediately after he teleports so he cannot appear behind you unnoticed. There is no confirmed fixed elemental weakness in the retail 1.0.2 notes, so treat his guard and phase mechanics—not an unverified element—as the weakness to exploit.
At the first health break he raises Scarlet Shield. The shield indicator turns grey: stop attacking because hits heal him. At the second break he glows red and chains teleporting blows from several angles; survive this pattern and resume ripostes when the glow ends.
Recommended build and equipment
- Swordmastery: directional block, Perfect Riposte, stamina recovery, and a fast follow-up attack.
- Keep one claw-art or other burst skill for the riposte window; avoid long animations during Scarlet Shield.
- Equip your highest physical armour, a repaired weapon, and every healing vial you can carry. A lantern or night-vision utility helps with the castle approach, not the damage check.
- Vampirism is useful for emergency sustain, but save blood abilities for after Scarlet Shield expires.
Fight plan and rewards
Stay close enough to read his three-direction strikes, block, riposte once, then reset. If poisoned, dodge and let the damage tick instead of trading. After victory choose to kill or drain him: draining unlocks Scarlet Shield; killing and looting grants the legendary Scarlet Shield reward item. The duel awards 500 XP and one skill point.
